just dreaming

as i was doing dishes this afternoon, i was fantasising about buying a piece of land and building our own home.

i had a particular dream home when we lived in farmington (utah). it was a navy and white craftsman, up on a hill, with beautiful big trees.

i want to build that dream house. build it bare bones, and move in with the minimum. i am thinking cement/bare floors, no cupboards or cabinets, and one- maybe two- toilet(s) and sink(s). then, we work on it and buy things as we can. mr. o can do the texture/painting. we can get things yearly (i'm thinking tax returns) like carpet, laminate and cabinets.

wouldn't that be fun!?

i think it sounds like such an exciting adventure.

we could take the time we needed to figure out exactly what we want and then save up for it, try to use any recycled/thrifted materials possible, and do as much as possible ourselves.

i am dreaming of a free-broken-tile mosaic bathroom floor, and lots of home-made shelving and furniture.

i am dreaming of a big front porch with a swing, and a room upstairs with a big window(s) and slanted ceiling(s). while i'm at it, i will even dream of a room downstairs for mr. o to put his projector and sound system. generous, aren't i?

i have no idea what building an even bare-bones house would cost (plus land) not to mention talking mr. o into such a hare-brained scheme, but hey-i am having fun dreaming it all up!

does anyone out there have any helpful advice or ideas on the subject?

(edited to add: i talked to mr. o and.... HE LIKES THE IDEA!! now we just have to figure out if it is at all possible before we settle for mediocrity. he did bring me back to earth a little, pointing out that my definition of 'livable condition' may not match the banks'..)
