halloweeeeen 2012

i wasn't sure if pumpkin carving was going to make the list this year, but it turned out to happen and i am glad it did! the little boys and i had fun picking them out, and we all had fun turning them into jack-o-lanterns!

here are the tired, spaced-out little trick-or-treaters with their pumpkins.

and now, i just have to break their costumes down piece by piece because that's how they were made!

so miles wore a tan colored shirt that i decorated with "war paint", which was supposed to look like his skin, but wasn't even close! also pictured is the little medicine bag i made with some left over fabric.

i also made up some fringy pants, and got him some awesome moccasins! we thrifted the leather belt, and made the tomahawk.

i was researching recipes for paper mache, and kind of came up with my own compilation of ingredients. we soaked a bunch of toilet paper in water for a short while, then squeezed most of the water out and added flour and salt (to deter mold) until it had a consistency we liked. we formed the tomahawk head and let it dry for several days, then painted it silver and added the "leather" fabric, feathers and beads!

the big feathers on this headdress came all the way from africa! miles' grandpa had the opportunity to go on safari earlier this year, and knowing miles' love for feathers, he brought these back for him! so awesome.

and here's the finished look! and i am just realizing that i totally forgot the war paint on his face on halloween night! (this picture was the saturday before, during a city program) 

and then we have finn!

he was changing his mind daily (if not more!) on what he wanted to be, so i had less time- not to mention energy!- for his costume. when he stuck on mickey mouse for a fraction longer, i jumped on it, since it would be fairly easy to do. we got some cheap black leggings and a black turtleneck for the body, and then found some white gloves, and borrowed a mickey hat.

i sewed up some shorts, with a tail in the back seam, and then we "borrowed" some of mr. o's socks and dyed them yellow to wear over his shoes. pretty simple!

and here's the look, sans shoes. he continued to waver on his choice, and settled for planning out the next dozen years worth of costumes, but he had lots of fun dressing up as one of his favorite characters!

poor leo kind of got the short end of the stick.

he just wore some hand-me-down pajamas with skeleton bones, but then i found some cheap gloves and a black hat that i sewed a skull and bone on.

he looked super cute, anyways, if only just by being tiny!

here are the boys and i at the trick-or-treat on main street function. i threw together an indian costume last-minute, thanks to my new moccasins!

it turned out to be a fun holiday, and i am already plotting next years' costumes! i think leo would make a really cute mini lumberjack, don't you? and if finn keeps his long hair, he could really rock a werewolf costume..
