okay, believe it or not, i am finally wrapping up the posts about japan! the end is in sight!
this post is going to be a photo overload, as i'm cramming in (almost) all of the flowers we photographed, as well as a few bugs for good measure!

(this was a bigger-than-average potato bug, by the way!)
these really exotic flowers were at the last shrine we saw on our
kamakura tour. it had the most amazing garden, and i'm sure we were also a little influenced by the indian friends we made who were there to study japanese flowers!
okay, i have to elaborate about this bamboo. this stuff is incredible! these pictures are from the backyard of our families' house. bamboo would sprout, and within the time we stayed (a little over a week) it would grow to amazing heights!
these tall stalks to the left were maybe two feet high when we got there.
wikipedia states reported growth rates of thirty-nine inches in twenty four hours! that's more than an inch/hour!

i was suprised that the new bamboo stalks with the "skin" still on (which was so soft and silky!) would collapse when i would squeeze them. i guess i knew that bamboo is hollow, but it looked sturdier! there is a huge difference when they grow taller and the brown skin comes off. when i would tap on it, it almost sounded like metal! anyways. bamboo is super cool! i'm glad i got a chance to see it up close!
